2016 Congressional Arts Competition
"Congressman J. Randy Forbes announced that this year's Congressional Arts Competition winner, representing Virginia's Fourth Congressional District, is Heather Danet...."

  Congratulation to James Garcia Otero
for becoming a National Merit Scholarship Winner

From approximately 1.5 million students who entered the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program, only about 16,000 were named Semifinalists. They were designated on a state representational basis, in proportion to each state's percentage of the national total of graduating high school seniors. In order to advance in the competition and be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, a Semifinalist had to become a Finalist by fulfilling several requirements that included submitting a detailed scholarship application and presenting a record of very high academic performance. All winners of about 7,400 National Merit Scholarships are chosen from the group of approximately 15.000 distinguished Finalists. CONGRATULATIONS TO JAMES GARCIA-OTERO for this outstanding accomplishment.

The Hour of Code was here and bigger than ever! December 7-13, 2015, CHHS Technology students along with 191,000 Schools and organizers participated in events worldwide. Students learned to code with Minecraft, Star Wars, or another fun challenges. There were 50 options for every age, experience-level, and device.

All students, by the end of their respective blocks, were coding. Many took over and were helping other students understand and move forward with their coding. Several were competing to see who could successfully enter the longest codes streams.

City Government Day
CHHS Advanced Placement Government students participated in City Government Day on December 3, 2015. Colonial Heights city government employees were "shadowed" in the morning by the students in order to learn about various aspects of our city government. In the afternoon all students participated in a mock city council meeting in which some students presented proposals from the various departments they shadowed while other students acted as the council and discussed the proposals presented. This year's group of 41 students is the largest in the 3 years that Mrs. Diane Yates (Vice Mayor) and Mrs. Julie McConnell (teacher) have coordinated this event. All the students enjoyed the experience and some came away with ideas of pursuing careers in the areas shadowed.

The FCCLA club at CHHS held a food drive for animal food and toys to be donated to our local  animal shelter. Classrooms and faculty generously donated an enormous amount of food which we took to the shelter. Pictured is Emily Bartholomew, Katelyn Tarter. Ms. Barker, advisor, and Jenny Smith with the Animal Shelter. They were very pleased with the amount donated and very thankful.
