CHHS teachers get into the holiday spirit by working on art pieces after school.

On Friday, November 15, twenty nine Government students from CHHS participated in a Colonial Heights City Government Day.  Each student was able to choose to "shadow" a member of a particular department.  In addition, all students were given a tour of the new court house.  After lunch, the students participated in a Mock City Council meeting.  Some students served on city council while others worked at getting city council to address their "department" needs.  It was a great learning experience for everyone involved.

On Election Day, Colonial Heights students had the unique opportunity to visit five different universities. Students visited Christopher Newport University, the College of William and Mary, Longwood University, Old Dominion University, and the University of Virginia for the day.

Our transportation department and director provided the busing and our gifted coordinator, school counseling office, and instructional aides provided the set-up and supervision for the event.

Students enjoyed the campus tours, classroom visits, and dining hall experience.  The visits gave our students a snapshot of what post-high school life could be like. Many of our students had not visited a campus before.

On the bus rides home, the chaperones shared that many of the students started setting personal goals for themselves. The children were also hopeful that they will have the opportunity to go again next year.

It was a very rewarding experience for all involved. The event was made possible by the generosity of our local Wal-Mart store. Our high school submitted a grant for the event and it was awarded in its entirety.

Congratulations to the Competition Cheer squad on their Regional Championship title! Good luck to the team as they advance to States!

Congratulations to Mrs. McConnell's Advanced Placement Government students for their winning entries in this year's "Face the Students" competition. Sydney Peterson won in the Immigration and Education categories and Drew Mehfoud won in the Family category. "Face the Students" is a program in which Government students across the state of Virginia submit questions online in five categories and then vote for the best ones. The top question in each category is submitted to the candidates for Governor and answered on camera. Afterwards the students get to watch the candidates answer the questions and vote on how well the questions were answered.

National Merit Schoralship Commendation

The principal, Kristin Janssen of Colonial Heights High School announced today that Anna-Claire Bousquet has been named a Commended Student in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal of this scholastically talented senior.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. ALthough they will not continue in the 2014 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2014 competition by taking the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

"The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success," commented a spokesperson for NMSC. "These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success."
